ENTHUSIASTIC PRAISE
FOR “BROADWAY MELODY”
'•Broadway Melody," the great alltalking, singing and dancing production coming to the New Regent Theatre on Saturday next, has been welcomed most enthusiastically throughout America. The “Photoplay Magazine” for April, for example, said: —- “ ‘The Broadway Melody* is going to sing merrily across the screens of the country, entertaining millions anti making new friends for the talking pictures. For ‘The Broadway Melody’ is sparkling, smart and entertaining—a credit to its makers and a joy to the fans. In it Bessie Love, as a little sister who loves and loses, gives the most astounding emotional performance in many months. In it the screen finds a first-rate singing actor in Charles King, from the musical comedy stage, and in it the blonde beauty of Anita Page blooms anew. “The picture is most notable, however because in it the talkies find nev, speed and freedom. The microphone and its twin camera poke themselves into backstage corners, into dressing rooms, into rich parties, and hotel bedrooms. Smart Broadway dialogue by James Gleason is expertly and naturally spoken. There is one coloured sequence with a new song, ‘The Wedding of the Painted Doll,’ that will start you. dancing. The box office plans for ' The Broadway Melody” season at the New Regent are now open at the theatre, and at Lewis Eady’s, Ltd.
“HOUSE OF HORROR” AT ROYAL “The House of Horror,” now at the Royal Theatre. Kingsland, is a comedy high-light with Louise Fazenda and Chester Conklin as the leads. The thrills are packed in tightly for all that, and William V. Mong, Thelma Todd, Hale Fuller, Emile Chautard and other well-known players carry the burden ok the serious melodrama. A great blue diamond, known to be hidden in the antique shop of a miserly eollecter. is the object that draws these people to one common battle ground amid as weird a collection of odds-and-ends. and through as queer a house as can be pictured. . •Wolves of the City.” the second big attraction, is a thrilling New York underworld story, starring Sally Blanc and William Cody.
