A DIFFICULT JOB
CHOOSING AUCKLAND BASKETBALL REPS. SATURDAY’S RESULTS Great difficulty was experienced by the selectors In choosing the team to represent the Auckland Basketball Association in the New Zealand Association’s annual tournament to be held at Christchurch on August 26. This was due to the fact that a large number of the “possibles” were on the same level, and the selectors therefore worked on the principle of making the team representative of as many clubs as possible. The selectors were:—Misses F. Lee, president of the Auckland Association, G. Gebbie, and T. Ogilvie. Their final announced after the last of a series of “Possibles and Probables” matches, which was played on Saturday afternoon, was: Attack, Misses M. Adams (Varsity), J. Mclntosh (Varsity - ), and B. Mueller (Varsity): emergency, Miss S. Wigmore (Training College). Centre, Misses J. Mueller (Varsity). L. Taylor (Waratah), and I. Jeffs (Grammar). Defence, Misses J. Harper (Grammar), C. Turner (Killarua), and N. Gallaher (Varsity); emergency, Miss 1. Totman (Varsity).
The association is entitled to send more representatives to the tournament. but finances will not permit of this. Besides the players Miss Lee and a delegate with travel, to Christchurch, and Miss S. Wigmore, an emergency, will act as the second delegate. Eleven provincial teams will be taking part in the tournament, and a number of athletic contests will be held. This latter is an impromptu arrangement this year, but it is hoped to make it a definite fixture in the future and to have a trophy to compete for. The manager and captain of the Auckland team are to be decided on at the next meeting of the Management Committee which is to be held on the evening of Monday, August 5. Only one senior inter-club match was played on Saturday afternoon on account of the University courts being under repair. This was between Grammar and Training College A. Although the teachers won. it was an even tussle. Miss J. Harper played her usual sound defensive game for Grammar, and the best attackers were Miss F. Vaile (Grammar) and Miss S. Wigmore (Training College). Play was advanced a stage further in the lower grade also. ! Results: ! Senior Grade.—Training College A, 9, Grammar, G.
