"DELAY UNAVOIDABLE”

RELIEF COMMITTEE UPHELD MONEY FOR URGENT CASES Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. As chairman of the Central Earthquake Relief Committee, Sir Joseph Ward has received a letter from Mr. McLean, chairman of the Karamea Relief Committee, Mr. Stewart, chairman of the Murchison committee, and Mr. Fraser, secretary, assuring him, in view of the criticism levelled against the committee, that, with full knowledge of the conditions existing in those areas and with the procedure of the committee, any delay was unavoidable, and, further, entirely necessary, as no definite action could be taken until full details were available to the committee.

“This, of course,” says the letter, "does not apply to dealing with urgent cases of distress, and with gratitude we recognise the promptitude of the committee in handling all such cases submitted to it.”

They deprecate any criticism which might tend to lessen the flow of muchneeded relief funds, which, in the aggregate, must amount to very large sums.
