ROAD TRAFFIC PROBLEM
MOTOR COMMISSION MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS HEAVIER PENALTIES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Friday. The Royal Commission on motor traffic in its report urges the passing of legislation to control road traffic, which is long overdue. It recommends no general or special speed limits for motor-cars or cycles, if fitted with pneumatic tyres, but omnibuses and coaches should be limited to 35 miles an hour and goods vans to 30 miles. The penalties for dangerous driving should be incr-ased to a maximum of £SO for the first offence, and £IOO for the second. The qualifying age for holding a motor-cycle licence sohuld be 16 instead of 14. There should be power to regulate pillion riding, also to order proper direction plates in towns.
