MAUKU STORE BURNT
OCCUPANTS’ ESCAPE THROUGH WINDOW OLD LANDMARK GONE (From Our Own Correspondent) PCKEKOHE, Today. Fire destroyed the Mauku store about three o'clock this morning. The store was built some forty years ago, and was one of Franklin's oldest landmarks. The occupants, Mr. W. J. Garvie and his wife, were awakened by unusual noises. The building was then full of smoke. The fire had a firm hold and the occupants were compelled to make their exit through a bedroom window. Neighbours were summoned, but owing to the absence of a water supply the fire could not be extinguished. It is thought that a defective chimney was the origin of the outbreak.
