Mr. P. W. SmaJlfield, field superintendent of the Agricultural Department in Auckland, is visiting Hamilton. Mr. A. M. Rust, a member of the Whangarei Borough Council, has resigned. A by-election will be held on August 20. Mr. Justice Kennedy left by last evening's Limited express on his way to Dunedin. In future he will be stationed there. Sir James Parr, High Commissioner for New Zealand, gave a reception in London at a West End hotel. Three hundred New Zealanders were present. Mr. A. A. Bodley and Mr. A. N. Good wore admitted as barristers by Mr. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court today. Mr. Gordon H. D. Grant was also admitted as a solicitor. Mr. M. H". Wynyurd left last evening to attend a conference of the North and South Island Motor Unions in Wellington. The conference will discuss impending legislation. Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, chairman of the Auckland Power Board, and Mr. J. W. Hayden, chairman of the Waitemata Electric-Power Board, returned to Auckland this morning from Wellington. Sir Bradford Leslie, who has been chairman and chief engineer of the Madras Port Trust since 1921, arrived in Wellington from England by the Ruahine on a health, recruiting voyage round the world. Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, was operated upon by an eminent surgeon in Sydney on Tuesday. His condition is satisfactory, but ho will not be able to see visitors until the end of the week. Mr. E. H. Potter and Air. J. Dempsey, members of the Auckland ElectricPower Board, Air. It. H. Bartley, general manager, Mr. N. M. Speer, secretary. and Mr. A. Alain, secretary of the Waitemata Power Board, all returned from Wellington this morning on the Limited. Mr. F. W. W. Rhodes, who went from Canterbury Chllege to Oxford in 1927 to continue his studies in English, has been awarded a First Class in his Honours Schools. Air. Rhodes has accepted a Professorship of English in the University of Rangoon. Two notable arrivals by the Alataroa from England were Major the Hon. George Peel. M.A., and Lady Agnes Peel They are staying at Government House in Wellington until the Muunganui sails for Australia next week. Major Peel will attend a conference in Australia of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, of which he is a director. Dr. "YV. A. Sledge, B.Sc., Ph.D., of Leeds University, has arrived from England, and will make Canterbury College his headquarters during his stay of live or six months in the Dominion. Dr. Sledge intends to travel through a large part of New Zealand doing botanical work and he will collect specimens for ihe Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Dr. Sledge has been Srunted eight months’ leave of absence from Leeds University. Lieutenant-Colonel C. N. Newman, D. 5.0., has relinquished command of the Northern Field Artillery Group, but retains his appointment of Commander "f the First Field Brigade. LieutenantColonel H. C.. Hurst, D. 5.0.. of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, has relinquished command of the regiment and is to command the Third New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, with the rank of colonel. Major F.
