THAT TAUPO LETTER
WAS THERE A REPLY? “NOT FAIR TO MR. COATES” 1 (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter} PARLIAMENT BLDGS, Wed. A brief brush occurred in the House of Representatives tonight between Mr. D. Jones (Mid-Canterbury) and the Prime Minister on the subject of the surprise letter to Mr. Coates that Sir Joseph Ward read during his speech last evening. Mr. Jones said that lie thought it was hardly fair to the Opposition Leader for Sir Joseph Ward to read out the letter on the Taupo line. There was a memo on that letter stating that it' had not been answered. Sir Joseph Ward: A reply was sent. I had it with me last night and could have read it. It is on the files. Mr. Jones: The reply was drafted, but the Leader of the Opposition was not satisfied, and it was not sent. Sir Joseph maintained that the reply was sent, and that the letter was on the file. Mr. Jones expressed a desire that the Prime Minister produce the letter and read it.
