CLAIM TO SPEEDWAY
MAORIS PETITION FOR TITLE ONCE A LAGOON (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDG., Wednesday. Two natives without land are now claiming the area leased to the Auckland Automobile Association as a speedway. They rejoice in the names of Ronganui, Te Aroha, and Raukoke Te Aroha, and they advanced their claim in a petition presented to Parliament today. The land is said by the natives to have formerly been a lagoon, and is at Pukaki in the parish of Manurewa. The Auckland Harbour Eoard has leased the land to the Automobile Association, and the petitioners state that the Pukaki Stream has been blocked up, making available an ai\\ of about 100 acres. In view of the lagoon being drained the petitioners request that the land be returned to them and the authority over the lagoon vested in the Harbour Board revoked. Petitioners claim that the land belonged to their ancestors before the war against the Europeans, but was confiscated by the Government.
