INADEQUATE SHELTER

FERRY PASSENGERS BADLY CATERED FOR BAYSWATER PROTESTS The Takapuna borough is again to approach the Harbour Board in an effort to have better shelter facilities made available for Bayswater ferry passengers. The recent decision of the board to transfer the Kohimarama shelter shed to Bayswater, plus the erection of a breakwind, is considered to be quite inadequate for the requirements of 6,000 people. At last night’s meeting of the Takapuna Council, Mr. A. H. Wilkie said he regretted that the recent deputation to the board had not properly stressed the vital necessity for proper shelter. The board's engineer had suggested three alternative schemes, costing respectively £1,600, £9OO and £SOO. This latter one had been adopted by the board and Mr. Wilkie described it as a “misfit.” He moved that the board be asked to agree to the intermediate scheme and that Mr. A. E. Greenslade, member of the board representing North Shore interests, be asked to co-operate with the council. Cr. Colegrove moved an amendment that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor, Cr. Wilkie and himself. The Mayor: The wharf is outside our territory. All we can ask is that, as an act of grace, the board should reconsider the matter as regards the intermediate scheme. It is a reasonable request. The amendment was carried. The shelter-shed from Kohimarama was transported to Bayswater by the Harbour Board’s floating crane this morning. The operation resulted in the 10 a.m. ferry boat from Bayswater being delayed some quarter of an hour in berthing. There being only one vessel on this run, it required a trip or two for the boat to pick up its normal schedule. The old shelter on the Kohimarama Wharf was no longer required there and it was decided some time ago to move it to Bayswater.
