BRIEF LIBERTY
DISCHARGED YESTERDAY FROM GAOL BEFORE COURT TODAY Discharged from gaol yesterday, Walter John Reader appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of stealing a gramophone and 12 records, valued at £ls 2s 6d, the property of a city firm. Reader, aged 25, pleaded guilty and Chief-Detective Hammond said that he had bought the gramophone on the time-payment system on January 22. He had paid 10s deposit and a few days later disposed of the machine to a dealer for £2 10s. He had paid no further instalment. “He came out of gaol only yesterday,” remarked the Chief-Detective. Under the mistaken impression that the offence had been committed after accused had been discharged from the gaol, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. sentenced him to a further term of six months, but, when the ChiefDetective assured him that the offence had been committed prior to his last appearance in court, the magistrate convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. Reader was ordered to make restitution.
