WINTER CUP TRIAL , FULL FEATHER GOES WELL (Special to THE SLXJ CHRISTCHURCH. Rapier a, ■ Honeycomb. anJ Trainers had the use of the trii-i ■ j grass this morning, but after rece— I rains it was very heavy and fast time: ! were out of the question. Gay Sonnet, who hopped awav front the five furlongs, went fast early, bir she came home strongly and her l--3-5 for the full distance was a good gallop. She had over 9.0 in the saddle but this did not prevent her from’ I hitting out in good style. She is in ’ the Winter Cup with a handy weight ! but whether she is class enough to win that race remains to be seen FYill Feather was bracketed ’with Sudden Storm during his half-jnik- , sprint, and as the 51 3-5 for that dh- ; tance was the best sprint effort of the morning the gallop shows tint ; neither is feeling the effects of racin'. ; at Trentham. Fancied for Gup Full l eather in particular impressci | onlookers, and in some quarters he fancied lor the Winter Cup. j The Viscount and Leader were associated in a five-furlong spurt. but they were not extended to record ] 0 2-5. For the same distance Battie ! Colours and Subdivision registered ; 1.10 3-5. and over six furlongs Honour e-nd Pride occupied 1.24 2-5, runnin-' the last half in 55 2-5. Chide and Starshooter worked strongly over six furlongs. and for that distance took 1.23 2-5 without being extended. Belcaire and Paquito ran home from ; the half-mile in 56. and for the same distance Aberfeldy recorded 55 3-5. Malmsey was strongly fancied for I her engagement in the Mayfield Handi- ; cap at Ashburton last month, and I though she ran below expectations in | that event her work since shows that j she is as fit as ever. This mornins: I she put up the best gallop over six furlongs, recording 1.20. and the wgy | in which she finished up her task indi- | cates that she should run well at her j next start. Of course, she is only a small mare, and winter weights are | bound to steady her, but it is as well to remember that at the Dunedjn meeting she inflicted an easy defeat on j her rivals in the Provincial Handicap. ] the beaten lot including King Balboa. I Circulation, Royal Saxon and Money Aline. Phastar again impressed spectator.'1 with the leisurely manner in which he strode over half a mile, registering 54. He was associated with his stable companion, Comique, but the big fellow was doing his work very comfortably at the end. Lord Ranald was restricted to stroii; work over a mile, and for that distane* he registered 1.55. May Win Shortly ; Marsham and Limerick together iw five in 1.9 3-5. Elysianor and Amor showed :• better advantage than Grand National in a six furlongs gallop, which occupied 1.24 2-5. Elysianor schooled brilliantly over hurdles yesterday morning and he may touch a short price in the Pukaki Hurdles at Washdyke on Thursday. Ivate Kelly has been performing with credit in her recent track trials, and the dashing manner in which she sprinted over four furlongs this morning in 52 1-5 indicates that she is near her best now. The three-year-old filly will contest the Novice Handicap at Washdyke on Thursday, and promises to run a good race in that event. Indeed, if she repeats her track form she may prove difficult 10 beat. Haze again drew attention to his South Canterbury prospects by running a good six furlongs with Overdrawn. The time, 1.23, was nothing to enthuse over, but both horses worked very well and apparently are in good form at present. A smart half-mile was that of GrandI song, who defeated Storm Raid easily j and recorded 52. Grandsong is an ini mate of F. Christmas’s stable and j track work at least shows that he is u j promising sort. Rapier had Rapina as a companion during his five-furlong sprint, and his time for that distance, 1.7 4-5, com- | pared favourably with the efforts of j other gallopers. Honeycomb again went attractively 1 over four furlongs in 53. and his stable j companion, Dutch Money, also recorded 1 the same figures for a like distance. Sweet Refrain and Pangolin finished I practically together at the end of sifurlongs in 1.24 1-5. and over two furI longs less Solgele occupied 54 3-5. Schooling Gala Day (I*. Tilson) gave a good display of hurdling over a round o. i the hurdles. He was accompanied b: Gay Jim (G. Salt), but he appeared t hold his companion safely throughout. At the last fence Gay’ Jim hit hard and dislodged his rider. Kaikahu (A. J. Peart) pleased the spectators with a fine piece of schooling over the big fences. He went twiccround and gave his usual good exhibition. Sea Boy (Salt) jumped fairly’ well over the big fences, but at the second of the double be ran off. Master Garland (Scobie) jumped s round of the fences, but there was no pace on and his display was far from impressive. The Grand National candidate Young Thurnham, was given his first schooling task since his arrival at RicI carton. With R. Beale ip the .-add?' 5 . he jumped the first two obstacles I slowly, but cleared the remaining fences in perfect style. Mime (D. ITall) gave an improved display over four hurdles. Team of Five In addition to Red Fuchsia, Glyn . Dhu, Blue Paper and possibly Calluna. Mrs. A. McDonald will take Locarno through to Riccarton for the Grand ; National meeting. The Elysian eddying made quite a promising showing in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham ana ; he should do still better at Riccarton, | particularly over a shorter course. Biding Thtir Time It has been reported that Mifitor . Gamp would be on hand at Riccarton early, but his trainer. J. P. Coyte. stated at the week-end that, provided track conditions locally were reasonably good, he would not go South any earlier than was necessary. The copi- , ous rainfall of late has left the at Awapuni heavy, but they geners* l *? ; recover quickly. Both Mister j and Novar are good doers away from home, so their mentor is not perturbedWith five representatives in the Gran National Hurdles. Awapuni promise ■ to hold a strong hand.
