MARTON FIXTURE
SPRING MEETING PROGRAMME ! . ' i An excellent opportunity is afforded owners, especially in the Auckland Province, to give their horses a run or two to fit them for the strenuous spring and summer campaign, at the Marton Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. September 4 and 5. and with £2,275 in stake money there should be some nice pickings, too. This will be the first fixture at which the seven stone minimum will be in vogue after the heavier winter weights. The Marton course is an excellent one, the club having spared no expense to make the appointments thoroughly up to date. The programme for the two days is us follows: First Day Trial Plate, of £IOO, six furlongs and 27 yards. For horses that have never w r on a flat race of £25 or over at time of starting. First Hack Hurdles, of £130; one and a-half miles. Spring Hack Handicap, of £125, one mile and 137 yards. Marton Handicap (open), of £200; one and a-quarter miles, 27 yards. Hunt Cup Steeplechase, of £l2O (including £2O silver cup), about two and three-quarter miles. Tutaenui Hack Handicap, of £l2O, seven furlongs and 27 yards. Mr. Arthur Way, Marton. at S p.m. on Friday, August 16. i Weights for the first day are due on ! August 22. Acceptances and entries ! for the two-year-old parade are due | on August 27. I Club Membership In the greater number of instances I racing clubs are anxious to extend j j their membership, but evidently such j !> s not the case with the executive of ! ; the Queensland Turf Club, which has a j i limit of SOO members. It is not giv- ! ing satisfaction to the waiting list I which is considerably over a hundred. i ; and agitation is being made to increase I ( the membership to 1.000. Probably i the cheap rate at which members can ! attend the meetings has a great deal to do with the matter, as the club holds 30 meetings a year, the entrance fee of members being £lO 10s. with an annual subscription of £3 3s which entitles a member to admission and three ladies’ tickets for each, gathering. Confidence—A Wonderful Thing A gentleman with more confidence ] than ability took his new car into the London traffic and got badly tangled amid the various “islands'’ in Trafalgar Square. After watching his evolutions for some time a policeman i strolled across and said, “I say. you’re 1 a fine driver, you are. I believe if j ] you were in the Sahara desert you'd : : run into a water trough."’
