TRAFFIC TROUBLES
SCHEME FOR BROADWAY PROBLEM TOWN-PLANNERS APPROVE What may be a scheme that will solve the traffic problem at Newmarket was submitted to the Auckland Town-Planning Association last evening by the technical group of members. The association’s executive decided not to issue details of the scheme at the present time. Instead, it is proposed to hold the plan for presentation to the Regional Town-Planning Committee, the organisation of representatives of public bodies, when it begins work on Auckland's traffic ouitlet proolems. The proposals were adopted. Scientific consideration was given them, and it was believed that the congestion in Broadway, Newmarket, would be prevented under the scheme. The ideas presented in the report have been evolved gradually after surveys extending over a considerable period. Under the plan provision is made for needs in the future. It is claimed that the scheme would agree with the plan which the Railway Department now has in view for dealing with the workshops area at Newmarket. Another suggestion in the report concerns the development of eastern parts of the city, including a new traffic outlet direct to Mount Wellington and calculated to open up undeveloped lands. At the request of Mr. G. "W. Hutchison, the acting chairman, conveners of the groups are to report on future activities and the question of increasing the membership: After a suggestion that points in the city, such as the part of Shortland Street where harbour waters once reached, should be marked with a sign for posterity, the association decided to compile a list of such places. The list will be submitted to the City Council for consideration.
