Recently the Marine Department proceeded against James Johnston and Maurice Field, charged as owner and master respectively of the ship Viking. not exceeding six tons register, propelled by a gas engine, that they did unlawfully carry passengers to sea for hire without a. duly certificated master or engineer. A further charge against Johnston. as owner of the vessel, was that he did ply on navigable water between Paraparaumu and Kapiti without a valid certificate of survey. Giving his reserved judgment, )Ir. 1“. K. Hunt, 5.1 L. said that there was no doubt that fishing boats which, as such are exempt from the provisions of survey in the Shipping and Marine Act, and from the provisions as to carrying a duly certificated master or engineer. according to an amending Act, must comply with the foregoing provisions, if it is intended to hire the boats out to fishing or picnic parties Fines were inflicted on defendants.
