HIS LAST CHANCE
TRICKSTER WHO ROBBED PROBATION FOR THEFT having been convicted yesterday on a charge of stealing £ls from Andrew Bishop, Jack Karup appeared at the Police Court this morning and was admitted to probation for 12 months. KARUP and a girl, who was admitted to probation yesterday, extracted £ls from Bishop by means of an ingenious fraud. They were all at a. party together, according to Chief-Detective Hammond, and Bishop gave Karup £5 with which to buy some stout. Accused had gone out with the girl. Later the girl had returned, saying that Karup had been arrested for assault and she wanted £7 10s to go bail for him. Bishop had then parted with another £lO. “I have talked with the probation officer,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., ”and he suggests that I give Karup a chance, as he has not previously been before the court on dishonesty charges. The terms of the probation ‘Will be strict.” Accused was ordered to make restitution of £ls. “If you do anything else wrong you won’t get another chance,” commented the magistrate as Karup left the dock.
