Harry Pollard. who directed the. picture. spent many weeks. both in Hollywood and on Broadway. in search for the ideal hero of the picture. I Schildkraut was chosen because of lhis popularity, his ability, his experi—ence, his good looks and last, but not least. because he looks like an actor off-stage as well as on. The role of Ravenal demanded just such an interpretation. The love scenes between Schildkrau: and Laura La Plante. the )laznolia of |the story, are said to be the most idyllic ever screened. The dialoguw for these scenes are characterised as veritable love lyrics. Joseph Schildkraut was born in Vienna. Austria. He graduated from )lommsen College. Berlin, Germany: and graduated from the Imperial Academy of Blusic in Vienna. and the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New sYork and has been in pictures six "years.
