Evidence for the police by the grocer said that an unknown voice was heard on the telephone The grocer was informed that letters and photographs concerning his wife were held, and that some expense would be in.Curred in regaining the letters. ! An assistant employed by the grocer ‘told how he kept an appointment under arrangement between the grocer and the unknown man. A final offer of £2 103 had been made as the cost of regaining the letters. The assistant said that he was met by the accused, who said that he was not able to get the papers at the moment. I Detective-Sergeant Doyle described how he saw the grocer’s assistant meet ‘ziecused. \Viluess later questioned 'accusod in the street and obtained a statement at the police station. in the statement Douglas admitted ringing the grocer but asserted that he had been acting for another man. The reason he had taken an interest in the letters was that he knew the grocer and his family and desired to get. the letters l'or the complainant. No application for bail was made on behalf of Douglas.
