BETTER SERVICE GIVEN

RAILWAYS MAKE ADVANCE THIS YEAR MR. H. H. STERLING’S VIEWS .Expressing a view that the railways were now coming into their own. Mr. H. H. Sterling, General Manager o£ New Zealand Railways, speaking at the annual dinner of the Auckland Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association on Saturday evening, said there was no antagonism with other forms of transport. In explaining his remark, Mr. Sterling said the position of the railways in New Zealand and other countries had largely been misunderstood. The railway accounts for the present year had shown an improvement, but he did not think the railway system should be judged by that standard alone. “The effectiveness of the system.” he said, “should be measured by the satisfaction it gives the people. Service to the public cannot be shown ’.in terms of money, and some forms at service giving no monetary return aae, nevertheless, indispensable to industry and the needs of the people.” Continuing, Mr. Sterling said the department was now operating under a now administrative system, and he asked that this new system be given a chance to prove itself.
