MR. HUGHES NOT A CANNIBAL In his newly-published book, “The World Crisis: the Aftermath,” Mr. Winston Churchill tells an amusing story concerning a meeting between M. Clemeneeau and the Rt. Hon. W. M. Hughes, then the Prime Minister of Australia, at the Peace Conference. Apparently the Frenchman had very hazy ideas of Australia and the Australians, for almost his first remark was: “Mr. ’Ughes, I 'ave ’eard that in earlv life you were a cannibal.” • Believe me, Mr. President,” said the Hiouiap:is mm,. ‘jCiiabj§_ moram aiil Commonwealth Prime Minister with has been greatly exaggerated.”
