“BEEN DECEIVED”
l SALVATIONIST UPBRAIDS 1 , EVANGELIST : X J BITTERNESS IS ROUSED ' Bitterness in the Cesmock church; centres of Newcastle. which amse; after the opening of the evangelistic“ campaign of Mr. Van Eyk, a South African preacher. came to a head at. the eyfxugfzpst’s meeting recenfly,
when Mr. Van Eyk and a chaplain; Captain Franks. officer in charge of. the local Salvation Army. got into; halts. } “I have been deceived by Mr. Van» Eyk,“ the Salvation Army man told‘; the audience. i There were tense scenes, during? which accusations were made by bothi parties. to the accompaniment of‘ boos and cheers from their respective.‘ supporters. ? “He Defeived Me" ; "When Mr. Van Eyk first came to: Cessnock,” Captain Franks declared“, “he promised that the converts wun be handed over to the Salvation Army. ‘Now we find that they are to be ‘drafted to a Pentecostal Church. which Mr. Van Eyk is to establish at Cessnock." i Up to recently. Captain Franks had: nightly occupied a position on the! stage at Mr. Van Eyk's meetings, and? several clergymen of other denomina-: tions had enthusiastically advertised; the evangelistic campaign from their; pulpits. E On the last Sunday. however. there: was an ominous silence regarding it in " the churches. On top of this one clergyman who gives Scriptural iustructiou at various schools. went so far as to warn the children againsr the preaching of Mr. Van Eyk. pir- ‘ tic-ularly regarding the baptism by Em mersion. Such rebaptism. the clergyman told the children. was a ~32 against the Holy Ghost. It was the
work of the devil. he said, and would mean the. consigning of their souls to hell. “May Have“: Pay Fines" There was a. large crowd at the meeting, which opened with hymns. and, as at a former meeting. Mr. Van Eyk’s assistant clapped and waved his hands as it in ecstasy. Now and then he asked those who believe in thv Lord to say "Amen." The response led him to exclaim, “You are all saver! and happy! Glory be to God!" “I expect I will have to pay a few pounds as flnes as a. result,” the evangelist told the crowd, “but the ban tism by immersion will proceed." Although earlier in the week he had advised the women to wear warm underwear and white stockings for the immersion ceremony. he told them that they may dress as they please, and that the eolnur of their ItOCHngs would not matter. One Honest Man Mr. Van Eyk made a. discovery m the meeting. “There is,” he declared, “at loasx one honest man in Cessnock, glory be to God. Amen‘" Mr. Van Eyk said that when he started his campaign he had 500 hymn hooks and now he could only find 240. “Hands up,” he said. “those who have the books at home." One hand went up.
