THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HANDBAG

The only fault I have to find with the newest handbags is that they make my existing collection look oldfashioned!

{ When taking a journey, who wants to carry anything but the new toilette bag which appears to be just like an {ordinary capacious handbag, but is in reality something a. great deal more useful. On one side it presents a compartment for handkerchief, powder, keys and purse,- and on the other side it is fitted with an oiled silk lining and pockts for soap, washing‘glove, small towel and comb. .I believe that a drssing~gown of the abbreviated kind might even find room inside; certainly a. diaphanous nightgown would easily be accommodated. Then there is the new shopping-bag, which, so long as you put no parcels in it, remains like an ordinary handbag so far as appearance goes. But put your various purchases inside and it expands in the most surprising fashion. It performs the miracle by means of press-fasteners, and still manages to preserve a good appearance.

Most: of the smart shops are now providing bags to match tweed and cloth coats, and evening coats are similarly accompanied. Truly this is a luxurious age! A fortune awaits the man or woman who will invent a mount capable of being fitted with a variety of bags, after the manner of

the umbrella stick that may be fitted with a number of different silk covers. L.M.
