A GIANT KAURI TREE—It was the abundance of this timber, easily accessible by water north of Auckland, which attracted vessels in search of spars in the days of early New Zealand. and led to the concentration of the shipbuilding industry at Auckland and northern centres. Kauri is rery little inferior to the oak of old England for boat building purposes.
