GOOD YOUNGSTER
7 STUD MATRON S SUCCESS There is every prospect of Lhe Ellers—lie mentor. J. h‘. Thorpe, having a par— Licularly line type 01 thoroughbred to work. on for the new season's racing. This is the rising three—ycar-old Catomu, who has been a regular visitur to headquarters for the past 1;: months. though only once has he sported siik. That. periormancdwas in the Onsluw Stakes, an event on the first day's card of the A.R.C. Easter meeting. Catonzu was there probably for euucational purposes. and a green horse set to meet. a seasoned held his running in the race \vas_ deemed satisfactory.
' The system of allowing a growing youngster every Opportunity to mature is apparently the policy trainer Thorpe is working on, and under such careful guidance the son of uatmint will come good iL' he possesses the Izunily speed. A glance through the breeding lines of the chestnut :‘hqu‘ that he has the necessary qualifications for a successful galloper. Bred at the Dilwurth Stud Farm, Papatoctuc, Gamma is by Cz‘tmint (son of Spearmint, a son of Carbine), from Loloma. by Monoform (son of llutcl‘ikiss). frmn Seabird, by Sou-Wester (sun of Goldsbrougli, and grandson of Firewurks).
Loloma‘s first foal. to Robert the Bruce, raced under the cognomen of Esplanade but luck failed to tend his ventures on the Turf, many minor placings with an occasional win being his share.
In 1919 Loloma produced Thurloma (by Thurnham), but she was never raced. And now we come to more recent history, the advent of Catmint‘s daughter Lomint. It was not until Lomint entered upon her three-year-old career that success came her way and though on only four occasions did she salute the judge, her record is nevertheless interesting. She has contested 30 races during the time she was in training for four wins and four seconds. one of her wins being in the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap. Lornint failed to ruztke a return in her first year as a racing proposition. but in successive terms she has proved a very profitable investment. and when she was retired to the stud a few months ago her net earnings amounted to £1,920. undoubtedly a good sum for a mare who hasfiron onl; {our races.
In 19:25 Loloma foaled again to Car.mint. the mating resulting in the colt under discussion. Catoma. Even as a yearling it was apparent that the chestnut was going to develop into a big horse. and as he was still springing up well into his two—year-old career a decision was come to to allow him every opportunity to furnish. And that he has, too. for very few of the rising three-year-olds at I‘lllel‘slis carry so impressive an appearance as does this pupil of J. Thorpe‘s establishment.
Having winterod well Catomzt is now undvr orders for serious buniness ahead. Confined to solid tasks lately. this has brought him nics-ly forward. and he should have it on a lot of horses of his own age whom he eventually takes his place in the field.
