MR. HUGHES NOT A CANNIBAL In his newly-published book, ”The World Crisis: the Aftermath,” Mr. \Vinston Churchill tells an amusing story concerning a meeting between M. Clemenceau and the Rt. Hon. W. M. Hughes, then the Prime Minister of Australia, at the Peace Conference. Apparently the Frenchman had very hazy ideas of Australia. and the Australians, for almost his first remark was:— “Mr. ’Ughes, I ’ave ’eard that in early life you were a cannibal.” “Believe me, Mr. President,” said the Commonwealth Prime Minister with the utmost gravity, “that statement has been greatly exaggerated.”
