DIVERSION OF U.S. MAILS
TRANSHIPMENT FOR SYDNEY Diversion of American mail to Sydney, and transhipment there to Auckland. was complained of by Mr. W. A. Boucher to the Chamber of Commerce Council yesterday. He referred to the postal matter landed by the Niagara, which arrived from Vancouver last Monday, and the arrival of Canadian mail by the Marama the following day. it appeared that the United States and Canadian postal authorities were not consigning Dominion niails direct by trans-Pacific steamers, apparently preferring to clear their offices of postal matter by sending it to Australia. Mr. D. Carter, manager of the Auckland branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, confessed he could not understand the position. He admitted the possibility that the New Zealand uiail was being sent to Australia, and being transhipped from there, as he understood that American postal authorities were in the habit of clearing waiting mail by the first available ?r earner. 'l’h.e chyn)**r decided to mafce fnr'•her inquiries. .
