FRIED-CHOPS CLUE
SHEEP THiEVES FINED THREE MEN IN COURT Press Association INVERCARGILL, Thursday. A charge of stealing two lambs, valued at 30s each, was preferred against William Warnoek, John Warnock. and Christopher Owen Cooper in the Magistrate's Court today. Accused pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt said the son of the farmer from whom the animals were stolen counted the lambs on June 7, and found the number correct. Two days later two lambs were missing. A search disclosed that two lambs had been killed and skinned in the bush. The detective-sergeant visited the Warnoeks’ house at Winton. The Warnoeks denied the offence, hut some chops were being fried at the time for which they could not account. Finally Cooper admitted the offence, and dug up a portion of one of the lambs from his garden. In the Warnocks’ garden another portion was found buried in a sack. The men had all made statements. They had stated that they had been drinking. Cooper was fined £lO, and the Warnocks were fined £ls each. On being informed that the latter had spent a week in custody, the magistrate reduced their fines to £l2 each.
