EX-MAGISTRATE’S PLEA
REINSTATEMENT SOUGHT 4THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Reinstatement as a stipendiary magistrate is sought in a petition presented to the House this afternoon by Mr. H. M. Rush worth (Bay of Islands) on behalf of Mr. P. L. Hollings, of Russell. The petition states that Mr. Hillings was appointed a magistrate by the [National Government in 1910 and he served in Marlborough, Nelson, Christchurch, Wellington and other places. In 1922 his health broke down temporarily as a result of overwork, and he was advised by Mr. E. P. Bee, then Minister of Justice, to take a long rest. At the suggestion of Mr. Lee, the petitioner said, he tendered his resignation on the understanding that if and when his health had recovered he would be reinstated. After six months’ rest he fully recovered and applied for reinstatement. He was advised that his application would be considered when a vacancy occurred, but his claim was ignored when several vacancies did occur. The petitioner said he was now 57 and well below the retiring age. He had applied to the present Minister of Justice, who originally appointed him. but without assigning any reason the Minister had refused his application, although several new appointments had been made by him.
