TRAMS TO NEW STATION

PLANS FOR RAPID MOVING OF PASSENGERS PENNY FARE POPULAR In co-operation with the Railway Department, the Transport Board is giving careful attention to the provision of the most modern facilities for the rapid conveyance of the public between Queen Street and the new railway station at Beach Road. In a word, the station will combine rail and tram transport as it is done at the Central Station, Sydney. pLANS prepared by the Transport Board’s engineering staff make provision for a single-line loop from the tram tracks in Beach Road to run up the western ramp, which gives access to the high-level station. The loop continues in front of the main .station entrance and passes down the eastern ramp to join the Beach Road rails at a point 500 feet from the h’anch-off nearest the city. On each vamp a subsidiary loop is planned for the storage of trams for use during rush hours. Features which passengers will appreciate are a safety-zone outside the main entrance and a 'vide verandah covering the zone and the whole approach to the platforms. Travellers will therefore be able to leave the trains and join tramcars without discomfort. It is probable that “through” trams will be run by the Transport Board, as well as those to and from the station only. Thus the public will be able to board cars at the station direct for. say, Parnell, Epsom, Remuera and the eastern and southern suburbs without the vexing delay of having to journey first to Queen Street. Similarly, intending railway travellers living in those districts will take a car with the designation, “City via Railway Station,” or words to that effect. The question of fares for the run from Queen Street to the station has, of course, not yet been before the board. The section being a short one would be popular at a penny. That is the fare by bus from the Ferry' Buildings to an amusement park, the route to which is not much shorter than the Queen Street-station run. The station is scheduled to be open for traffic in March, 1930, and it is expected the tramway loop will be begun at the end of December.
