Grammar v. Varsity
STUDENTS’ NEED TO WIN
Keen Rugby Tomorrow
CHIEF interest in tomorrow’s Rugby Union series will be centred in the meeting of University and Grammar Old Boys. If weather permits the use of Eden Park, this will take place on No. 1 ground, otherwise it will be played at the Showgrounds with other senior games. In order to preserve its chances in the senior championship University cannot afford to lose a game, and against Grammar, which has a happy knack of springing surprises, the students will have to contest every inch.
Ground conditions should suit the big Grammar pack, and with the forwards properly on the job an evenlycontested game should result. Three, other matches have been set down for Eden Park tomorrow. The secondary schools fixture between Mount Albert Grammar and Hamilton High School should provide an interesting curtain-raiser to tlie chief game. College Rifles will play Technical Old Boys on No. 3 ground at 1.30. and Marist and Grafton will try conclusions on No. 2 ground at 3 o’clock. City and Ponsonby will meet at the Showgrounds, and Manukau and Training College at Onehunga. Teams are as follow: Senior A Grade University.—Robinson, Edwards. JUNIOR NOTES Splashing through the water and slush did not appeal to the majority of junior teams last Saturday. In consequence most engagements were abandoned. The defaulters in B section were numbered six teams, while four teams in A section did not complete their fixtures. This, however, is the first Saturday lost so far this season. There is a prospect, if the present weather conditions hold, of no play being allowed on the Domain and Grey Lynn Park tomorrow. Having a bye. Ponsonby put in a profitable day’s training in a keenlycontested match with Manukau junior reps, at Papakura. The Ponies’ combination even on a slushy field was too good for the West Coasters who, in spite of a determined forward struggle, went under by 15 points to 9. * * * Another of the leading teams, Grafton, had a close call in a hard-fought match with Varsity A, the Magpies winning narrowly by 8 points to 6. Grafton forwards, among whom Bryson was prominent, were chiefly responsible for maintaining the position on the premiership ladder.
