TOUR OPENS WELL
AUSTRALIANS WIN FIRST HOCKEY MATCH GAME AGAINST WAIRARAPA Press Association CARTERTON, Thursday. The Australian representative hockey team played the first match of its tour at Carterton this afternoon against Wairarapa. The visitors won by seven goals to three. The weather was cold and dull and the attendance was poor. In the first spell Wairarapa had the better of the game, the slow, stick ground hampering the Australians, but in the second half the visitors gave a much improved display, having evidently got the pace of the ground. A few minutes after play opened, M. Cornie shot a good goal for the visitors, who again broke through the defence, Nettleton scoring. Wairarapa attacked, a good centre by Whitburn to Riggs giving Brocks his opportunity. A movement started by Bannin enabled Goodin to equalise the scores. Early in the second spell Fitzgerald scored for Australia, and Wairarapa retaliated. Goodin netting the ball. Three Australians, Fitzpatrick, Wanless and IT. Cormie, then scored in quick succession. Play was then very much in favour of Australia, and from a scramble Nettleton scored the final goal, the game ending shortly afterward. A feature of the game was the good stick work by the Australian forwards. W. Nettleton, IT. Cormie and L. Fitzpatrick were outstanding players for the visitors, while for Wairarapa, Whitburn. C. and W. Bannin. Goodin, Riggs and Smith did excellent work.
