City to Meet Marist
Close Scoring in Cup Games
NEARING SENIOR LEAGUE FINAL
MOK-B than usual attention should be attracted to Carlaw Park tomorrow, where City will meet Marist in the feature League clash of the day. The City thirteen, which lias risen from the ranks of the weaker teams to one of the tinest sides ill the competition, has a lead of one point from the Tykes for the Stallard Cup, awarded for competition in the second round, and a great tussle can well be expected.
Both City and Marist have given rood exhibitions of the code recently although, in tomorrow's match the odds must be handed to City, which rose to groat heights to defeat the once invincible Shore Leaguers. The Tykes, however, have yet tx> meet Shore, but at present they are playing with marked consistency and cannot be deprived of the honours of being the team well capable of extending City. In thick mud and slush both sides battled hard to cross the line, but failed and the game ended with no score. Akarana has a crack fullback in O’Donnell, possibly the best in the grade. O’Donnell started off on the wing, but during the game went into the scrum, and Truscott, who made a good showing, came out to take his place. Linkie was strong at centre, while Alderston and Stan away combined well at five-eighths. Lusty (hooker), Fjeachy, Williams and Kauhu were the pick of the forwards. For Kingsland, Robinson, at half, who was previously commented upon in these columns for hanging on to the ball too long, played a different class of game altogether on Saturday, and by letting the ball away proved a tower of strength to his side. Shaw played his first game on the wing and did quite well. Tunnicliffe was outstanding at fiveeighth, while Fox, Burton and McCammish were the shiners among the forwards. It is a toss-up between two for the best hooker in the fourth grade. Lusty, of Akarana, and McDonald, of Richmond, are the two, The Shore second graders won by default from Newtyn last Saturday. This side from over the water is now one point behind Mount Albert in the competition. The Shore seconds have a good fullback in Lang, and he looks to be certain for representative honours this season. Tait on the wing is also a crack, and it is doubtful if he will be beaten for a place in thS junior reps. Shore has a versatile half in Morgan. He was breakaway forward last year, but this season he is to be seen lurking behind the scrum, where he is doing well. * * * Tomorrow week the Auckland junior reps, will meet the South Auckland junior reps at Cariaw Park. This match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Northern Union Cup game to be played between Auckland and South Auckland seniors. * * • The junior representative team will be selected next Saturday. * * * There will be no second or ihlrd grade fixtures decided tomorrow week owing to the rep. match at Carlaw Park. The Newmarket third intermediate side, which lost the services of Meehan last season when ho went over to play for the Ponsonby seniors has now got him back in the fold. He has been granted a transfer and should be seen out with the Newmarket side in the near future. * * * Owing to the weather conditions last Saturday there were not a great number of junior grade games decided. All the games fixed to take place at the Domain and at Grey Lynn Park were postponed.
