BOUGHT ONE—TOOK TWO
FINED FOR TYRE THEFT Whether he thought he was entitled to discount will never be known, but it was said at the Police Court this morning that John Edmund Turner walked into a Hamilton garage to buy a motortyre, and came out with two, only one of which had been paid for. Turner was charged at the Police Court this morning with attempting to steal a tyre valued at £2 from Edward Morton Valintine, at Hamilton, on June 16. Mr. Sullivan entered a plea of guilty on his behalf. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, accused, with two others, had been to a garage in Hamilton to buy a tyre, leaving their truck outside. Another tyre in the garage had also been taken and put on the truck, but was later placed on the road outside the garage. “This man is responsible,” said the chief-detective. Mr. Sullivan admitted that his client had the tyre, but only for a few moments. It was an old second-hand one, which he thought was of little use. “I advised Turner to plead guilty to save the trouble and expense of bringing witnesses from Hamilton,” added Mr. Sullivan. The Chief-Detective: The man missed the tyre, and called out, asking whether accused and his companions had it. It was then in the truck, and they put it back. A fine of £5 was imposed.
