HIS MAJESTY’S
ALLAN WILKIE ON SATURDAY The delightful comedy, “She Stoops To Conquer,” with which Mr. Allan Wilkie opens his short season of 10 nights at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday next, one of the jewels in the crown of English literature, is a certain success whenever presented to the public. There is a jollity and sweet good humour that is entirely infectious, and tho play only needs justice done to its interpretation, which in Mr. Wilkie’s production is assured, to send away from the theatre a perfectly contented and highly-entertained audience. The plot is said to be founded on a practical joke played upon Oliver Goldsmith in his youth when, upon inquiring the way to an inn, he was directed to the local squire’s mansion, who seeing the humour in the situation. carried the joke through in good part. The wit in the play is all the better for being thoroughly Irish, and the dialogue has a charm, in addition to lightning repartee which ven surpasses Sheridan’s work in "The School for Scandal" and “The Rivals,” which plays Mr. Wilkie also presents during his 10 nights* season.
The cast has the same clever players that Mr. Wilkie presented in his Shakespearian productions. The whole production of each play is entirely new, with costumes of an unusual magnificence.
