SEASON OPENS
Brisk Demand for Oysters
SCENES AT WHARF DEPOT
Although many private people in search of modest rations waited the official opening, the biggest consignments were sought by fish dealers whose vans were drawn up outside the depot. The starting prices were as follow: —One gallon, Is 6d; sugar bags, 5s 6d; sacks, £1 4s.
Throughout the morning business was brisk, and there was keen private demand for the smaller quantities. So keen that oysters in some form will be on many city dinner menus this evening.
Many shells were prized open at the depot doors, and oyster fanciers made wishes on the first fruits of the season. There is a large supply of oysters at the depot sacked ready for distribution, and fresh supplies will arrive three or four times weekly from the Hauraki beds.
Oysters open to counsel should, of course, not linger a-bed, but none will be sufficiently advised to don run-ning-shoes and avoid dietary doom.
