“PUBLISHER” REMANDED
FRAUD CHARGE AGAINST ARTHUR STRANGE “CATHOLIC REVIEW” CASE Objecting to Arthur Strange being remanded for two weeks as it would mean his missing the criminal sessions at the Supreme Court and the charge would be hanging over his head until November. Mr. A. H. Johnstone made an arrangement to have a charge of fraud heard against his client next Thursday, at the Police Court this morning.
Strange was charged with obtaining £l5O, with intent to defraud, from Arthur Frederick Rowe, by representing that he had a publishing company at 509 Dilworth Buildings and that he Was the sole agent for certain publications, including the 1930 “Catholic Review.” The charge also alleged that Strange had represented that he had authority from the head of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand to have the “Review” distributed in all the Roman Catholic Churches in the Dominion. Chief-Detective Hammond said the principal offender in the case was standing trial In Melbourne, and the police did not want to go on until the man, whose name was Tabor, could be brought back to New Zealand. The chief-detective said that he could go on, but he thought it was to accused’s advantage to await Tabor’s arrival. It would mean that Strange would miss the next sessions at the Supreme Court, however* and that he would have to wait until November. Mr. Hammond suggested a remand for 14 days.
“We fear the Greeks when they bring us gifts,” quoted Mr. Johnstone. “We are willing to meet the police, but not to this extent.” Counsel was of the opinion that the remand should not be for more than a week, and to this the magistrate agreed.
