BUILDING PERMITS

£7,772,000 IN FIVE YEARS MASTER BUILDERS AT DINNER During tlie past five years building permits for work amounting to £7,772,000 have been issued in the Auckland district by the City Council. This fact was mentioned last evening by Mr. J. S. Tyler when replying to the toast of the “Municipal Officers" at the annual dinner of the Auckland Master Builders’ Association.

In proposing the toast, Mr. C. J. Bishop spoke of the lack of friction between the builders and the officers of the City Council, which he thought was the outcome of conferences with all concerned. There was also a desirable smoothness in seeing that council by-laws relating to building were carried out. Any little differences which had occurred were the result of a misinterpretation of the by-laws. In his response. Mr. Tyler paid a tribute to the founders of the building association in Auckland. They were men who had left monuments in the city, and characters which were revered by the builders of today. After giving the total value of the permits issued during the past five years, lie said that the yearly average was £1,500,000. It was a great test to the integrity of the master builders of Auckland that the cost of the inspecting staff was not .1 per cent, oi the total amount of the work carried out each year. Other toasts honoured were “Auckland Architects,” proposed by Mr. KA. Cornish; “Auckland Merchants, proposed by Mr. J. H. Hutchinson; and “Allied Trades,” proposed by Mr. "WE. Johns. There was an excellent attendance at the dinner, which was held in the Delmonica Cafe. During the evening the following contributed to a programme of songs and elocutionary numbers:—Tlie Lyric Quartette, Messrs. Arthur Ripley, Ernest Thomas, Alan McElwain, Herbert Richards, and M. H. Worsley.
