NIGHT RAIDERS
INCREASED SHEEP STEALING NEW LEGISLATION NEEDED (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Minister q£ Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, is going into the Stock Act with a view to stopping the activities of those who go round the countryside with tiaicks in the dark hours and leavo the farmer in the morning to find that part of his flock is missing. Mr. W. J. Poison (Stratford) asked him to go into the question of extending the provisions of the Stock Act so that it should be illegal to remove stock vehicularly, except by train, between the hours of sunset and sunrise. This could lessen the prevalence of sheep stealing. “I will go into the question of amending section 58 of the Stock Act,” the Minister replied, “so as to make it applicable to stock carried by road in motor vehicles.
“As regards the appointment of officers to assist vigilance committtees and the police in the suppression of sheep-stealing, this is a matter for the Police Department, but inquiries are being made as to whether the present stock officers of the department can in the course of their duties afford some assistance in this direction.”
