ENGLAND BEATS AFRICA AT CRICKET CENTURY TO OWEN-SMITH (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. In the cricket test at Leeds, England beat South Africa by live wickets. Though. South Africa’s position appeared hopeless when play was resumed, the last three wickets added 159. Owen-Smith scored the highest for South Africa in test matches, and England's last wicket added 103 (another record), today's being the most exciting of the three days' play. Owen-Smith was dropped three times. He hit two sixes and 15 fours, and also broke a bat. Woolley eventually caught him at point. The tourists’ indomitable spirit won an ovation. At the close of their innings England wanted 184 to win. It lost Sutcliffe and Hammond with the total at 13, half the side being out cheaply. Owen-Smith further distinguished himself, catching Sutcliffe. The Africans, fielding nobly, kept the runs down. Woolley played a chanceless innings.
