TRAFFIC MAN TRICKED
FALSE NAME GIVEN
SHOULD CARRY CAMERA The suggestion that suburban traffic inspectors should carry cameras to combat the practice of some cyclists in giving false names when accosted was made in the Magistrate’s Court this morning by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. Inspector Stoup, of the Mount Albert Borough Council, brought a charge against J. Wilfred of riding a bicycle on the footpath. Defendant produced a letter from his employer stating that he was working in Remuera at the time when he was supposed to have been cycling along a footpath on the other side of the town. Wilfred further maintained that he had gone to his work by tram, and had not used a cycle. “Wilfred was the name I was given, but then we get so many false names,” remarked the inspector, who was unable to recognise Wilfred, or to say definitely whether he was the offender or not. “It is evidently a case of mistaken identity,” commented the magistrate, dismissing the charge. “You inspectors will have to carry cameras round with you, so that this trick cannot be played.”
