PROPOSED WATER BOARD

SUPPORT FROM MT. ALBERT V f COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION A spirited discussion on water questions took place at a meeting o£ the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, when a letter was received from the Mount Eden Borough Council regarding the recent conference of local bodies to discuss the establishment of a Metropolitan Wafer Board. Later the question of the rate to be charged ratepayers for water during the current year was raised, as the City Council was reported to be increasing the rate for water supplied to suburban local bodies to Is 3d a thousand gallons. “It seems to me that we are paying for the mistakes of the City Council and for its water schemes. I think' it is time for us to go further afield, and I would suggest as far as the Waikato River,’’ said Mr. A. A. Buckley. Mr. J. H. Langley considered that support should be accorded Mount Eden in order to get a better supply for the ratepayers who should get water at a reasonable rate. The council should fight the water question strenuously, said Mr. W. G. Russel!, in whose opinion the recent Water Commission was a farce. it was ridiculous that Mount Albert ratepayers should have to pay a higher charge than the city ratepayers. Other members also supported the proposed board, and the Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, said the council should do its utmost to advance the requests to Parliament for a water board, and a resolution was carried unanimously. The Mayor was appointed as the council’s representative on the committee, and it was decided to ask that the council should also be represented by the chairman of the Water and Fire Brigade Committee. Mr. W. Fulton considered that the council should have been consulted sooner about the meeting held at Mount Eden. No official advice had been received from the City Council, and the question of increasing the water rate in the borough was referred back to the Water and Fire Brigade Committee until notice in writing was received from the City Council.
