WHANGAREI UNEMPLOYED
WORK FOR NEARLY 50 MEN (From Our Oxvti Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. \ statement of the unemployment position as it affects Whangarei was made by the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones at the meeting of the 'VVhangarei Lorough Council last evening. He said there were 55 married men registered on the books, but prospects of improvement were offered by the tact that work would commence during the week at Kay's deviation. Paparoa, which was likely to absorb between 30 and 50 men. The chairman of the Works Committee and the staff had been helpful in assisting him do the best possible for the distressed men, but whereas the Government, had been asked tor a grant of £1.500. on which the council was prepared to give £1 for £l, only £SOO had been given, and this for labour only. ... ~ . He was afraid, said the Mayor, that unless the number of unemployed eased off further requests would need to be made. After the Kays deviation work commenced they would go thoroughly into the position with the district engineer and the Labour Department to ascertain the exact position.
