Early Fancies for the Big National Treble
With a first acceptance for the two Grand Nationals and the Winter Cup due on Friday night next, and with the expected big weeding-out. of several horses from this popular treble event, it is not proposed at this stage to review the fields for those races, this being left for later on. In the meantime, however, it can be mentioned that those horses who have raced recently in a prominent manner at Auckland, Wellington and elsewhere, and who are to be considered for the big Kiccarton contests, will include the following: Grand National Steeplechase.— WlLTSHlßE, the elect of the Hannon pair (KING'S GUARD and ROMAN ABBEY), URALLA, MANGANI and MAUNGA. Winter Cup.— PADDON, HISTORIC, BLACK DUKE, GOLD CURE and MERRY MINT. Grand National Hurdles.— MlSTEß GAMP, OVERHAUL, LOCARNO, RED FUCHSIA and HOROMEA. The above horses are not necessarily written in their order of preference. To name even half a dozen in the Grand National Hurdles presents in itself a most difficult problem, for that event is too intricate at the present time, with so many horses also entered for the big steeplechase, which is run on the first day. For instance, if not started in the steeplechase, and reserved solely for the big hurdles, such horses as King’s Guard. Wiltshire, Roman Abbey and Mangani would possess indisputable chances. Perhaps the acceptances on Friday night will clear the air a bit in this direction.
