FREE TRAM FARES

MT. ALBERT DISCUSSION “It is well known that most of the officials of the City Council travel on the trams free of charge. I have sat beside them and seen them tender a pass.” This statement was made by Mr. J. H. Langley at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, when a letter was received from the Transpbrt Board regarding free passes on trams. “If employees of the City Council can ride free, surely those who are working for the benefit of the ratepayers are entitled to ride free also,” said Mr. Langley. The Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes: I have a list of the holders of the passes. There are 51 and they arc paid for by the City Council. Mr. Langley: Out of ratepayers’ money. The Mayor said that passes were not issued individually, but through the board or local body concerned. Mr. Russell moved that the clerk submit a report to a meeting of the joint committee showing the cost of tram fares used by officers of the council. The motiou -was carried.
