“OIL SCHOLARSHIPS”
COMPANY MAKES OFFER TO EDUCATION BOARD “BUSINESS PROPOSITION” “It looks to me like using the schools for advertising,’* said Air. A Burns, chairman of the l -Auckland Education Board, today when the board was considering an attractive scholarship proposition made by a Dominion motor spirit company. The proposal, which has been mad< to the four provincial education boardconcerns the granting of scholarship* to the sixth standard children writing the best essays on the petroleum industry after seeing a film and hearing a lecture. The scheme, so far as Auckland is concerned, provides for two scholarships of £25, one for a boy and another for a girl. There are also two others of £l2 10s each. The scholarships are available for one year, and may be held at any nominated secondary school or technical college. The conditions of the scheme had been approved by the Education Department; but the onus of accepting the offers was left to the respective education boards. Mr. H. S. W. King said the board had no wish to deprive children of any advantages that might be obtained, but it would be advisable to ascertain what view was being taken by the other boards. Mr. F. A.
