NEW RESERVOIR SITE

. ONEHUNGA AFFAIRS At the meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last evening the -Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, reported that the council had now taken over the control of the finances connected with the erection of the Arch of Remembrance in Jellicoe Park. This course was necessary in order to secure the Government subsidy of £142. He had no doubt that the funds now in hand would be sufficient to complete the work, which, was being rapidly pushed forward. In this connection it was unanimously agreed that an expression of appreciation be forwarded to Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., for his valuable assistance in obtaining the Government subsidy. The Mayor reported that as a result of a deputation of the Finance Committee to the Auckland Power Board asking for a reduction in the charges for current and street lighting, he doubted whether any rebate would be made until the plant at Arapuni was in full working order. Other councillors. however, expressed their opinion that judging by the sympathetic reception and the favourable tone of the members of the Power Boa.rd there were good reasons for believing that a reduction would be made during the current financial year on the charges for power, if not on those for street lights. The Streets Committee was appointed to confer with the One Tree Hill Road Board for the purpose of reaching an agreement as to the boundary between the two bodies along Campbell Road. A resolution was carried authorising a rebate of 5 per cent, on all rates for the current year if paid within 30 days of demand. The Mount Roskill Road Board granted the council permission to erect a seat near the bus stop in Hillsborough Road for the convenience of visitors to the council’s cemetery. The usual bacteriological examination of the borough’s water supply by the Department of Health proved satisfactory. Mr. TV”. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, wrote to say the Government would subsidise 50 per cent, of the labour cost at 14s a day, also cost of cartage if a loan of £7,000 for unemployment is raised immediately and the work completed this year. A recommendation was adopted that the proposals for a streets construction loan be deferred. Quotations having been received from Lloyds and also the State Fire Office for insuring the council’s buildings. trucks and motor-cars, it was decided to accept that from Lloyds as being the lower, but that the workers’ compensation policy remain with the State Office. A recommendation by Mr. John Rogers. C.E., that the Ellerslie Town Board and the One Tree Hill Road Board be asked to contribute £SO each as their portion of the costs of a legal action recently brought against the council by Mr. John Dawson, C.E., was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. The One Tree Hill Road Board is to be asked for a site for a second reservoir on One Tree Hill. No further representations are to be made to the Mount Roskill Road Board on the question of burning the household refuse from that district. Mr. D. L. Gordon was appointed -•iceman of works in place of Mr. C. iL Bridge, resigned,
