STREET COLLECTIONS

POSITION IN ONEHUNGA When an application for permission to take up a street collection came before the Onehunga Borough Council last evening from the St. John Ambulance Association, the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, expressed the opinion that the public, as well as the women collectors, were getting tired of so many demands being made upon their purses and their time. He considered the time had arrived for a complete change of policy, with a view to reducing the number of collections. He suggested that a conference of local bodies should be called with the object of devising some scheme whereby a check might be placed on a custom that is rapidly growing in public disfavour.
