WATER INVADES SHOPS

HAILSTONES AT HAMILTON WAIKATO RIVER RISING (from Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Monday. One of the most severe hailstorms experienced in the Waikato for years struck Hamilton shortly after 2 o’clock this afternoon. Hailstones as large as small marbles fell continuously for nearly 15 minutes. Street drains and sewers overflowed and at every street corner knots of people were marooned. Three shops were inunadated by water in Victoria Street. The invasion of water was due to a defective roof. Damage estimated at £3O was done to delicate and valuable electrical instruments in the shop of T. L. M. Millar and Company. Several of these instruments will be returned to the English makers for repair. Garments were drenched in the adjoining premises of the Waikato Dye Works, and the water partially flooded J. W. Belz's furniture shop. Several farmers report damage to crops as a result of the downpour. The Waikato River has risen more than six inches since last week.
