HEUGHAN’S FAREWELL
TOWN HALL RECITAL The famous Scottish actor-singer, Mr. William Heughan, gave the last of his Auckland recitals at the Town Hall last evening. His fine baritone voice was heard to advantage in a programme of Scottish songs and old county ballads, in which he displayed his remarkable versatility. His items included “The Standard on the Braes Mar,” “McGregor’s Gathering,” “Kirconnell Lea,” and “Because I Were Shy.” Other popular contributions were the items by Mr. Heughan’s accompanist, Miss Gladys Sayea-, and the noted English ’cellist. Miss Maud Bell. “SUBMARINE” “Submarine,” a remarkable undersea drama, by Columbia Pictures, featuring those two sterling actors Jack Holt and Balph Graves, is considered to be one of the finest sea stories produced for the screen. Columbia created a great record by producing “The Blood Ship,” and this picture eclipses all their previous efforts. It is the story of two pals who are separated through the intrigue of the wife of one. The big climax comes when the husband, a diver, is notified that his friend is entrapped in a submarine 400 feet under the surface, and it is up to him to get the lifeline to the imprisoned man. It is a powerful story, relieved with a touch of comedy here and there.
Paramount’s sound synchronised Production, “Abie’s Irish Rose,” will be released soon in New Zealand.
