FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
The allocation of the county main roads fund was discussed by the Franklin County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday. It was decided to hold a special meeting on July 29 to deal with the question and to further consider the Whangarata to Pokepo road project. Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., presided. Following recent representations made to him on the subject, the Hon. G. W. Forbes advised that the Minister of Native Affairs was preparing legislation to enable the Maoris concerned to take up section for farming purposes on the area of 282 acres of native land at Waipipi. When settled the land will be rate producing. Complaint was made by the Waiuku Chamber of Commerce regarding the use of loose metal on county roads and the consequent danger to motor traffic. The council decided to intimate that until the roads were tar-sealed it would have to continue with the method of maintenance. The Auckland Automobile Association’s request that influence be used with the contractors at the Maketu quarry to preserve an area of five acres containing a Maori burial ground and the trig station was received, the quarrying rights having been let. It was agreed.not to offer any objection to a Domain Board controlling the main Patumahoe Domain in addition to the area of land occupied by the bowling green and tennis courts. A proposal to improve the alignment of the Drury-Waiuku main highway at Paerata, by exchanging g,n area of land with the Wesley College Trust, was referred to a sub-commit-tee comprising Crs. Urquhart, Garland, the clerk and the engineer. The following rates were struck: Awhitu riding, 1 l-8d; Drury, lgd; Hunua, lgd; Karaka, Id; Mauku, i 3-8 d; Mercer, lid; Pukekohe East, 1 l-B.d; Pukekohe West, lid; Waipipi, lid; Waiuku, lid. A hospital rate of 3-10 d was struck.
