STILL A KEEN BOWLER

TO CELEBRATE 87TH BIRTHDAY Still taking an active interest in the game, Mr. William Fogarty, of Wairiki Road, Mount Eden, who is one of the oldest and best-known bowlers in Auckland, will celebrate his 87th birthday tomorrow. He has been an enthusiastic bowler in this city for the past 25 years and for the last eight t years has been a member of the Mount Eden Club. Born at Ashton-under-Lyne, near Manchester, England, Mr. Fogarty arrived at Dunedin in the emigrant ship Oamaru in 1880. The vessel, which was under the command of Captain John Stewart, took 112 days to make the voyage to New Zealand, encountering for the greater part of the journey boisterous weather. For a short time Mr. Fogarty was prospecting in various parts of Otago, but had little success. He was a keen admirer of the late Mr. R. J. Seddon, and in June, 1895, attended his 50th birthday celebration in Wellington. About 1897 Mr. Fogarty, after residing in various towhs throughout New Zealand, came to Auckland, where he has lived ever since. He has also been a most enthusiastic cricketer and right up until he was 02 years of age, when he gave the game best, he wielded the willow with marked success. For many years he was a member of the Shore Club and one of his notable performances was on the last occasion he took the field, when he scored 62 not out, in a match against Ponsonby. Today, Mr. Fogarty is indeed hale and hearty, and intends to continue taking all of his usual keen interest in the bowling game.
